Naming storms makes people take notice of the risks of severe weather and help communities stay safe, protect their homes and make better informed decision ahead of severe weather. For example, Storm Floris, the last storm to be named in the 2024/25 season saw 93% of people in amber warning areas aware of the alerts and 83% taking action!

When do storms get names?

Storms will get named when they’re deemed to have the potential to cause ‘medium’ or ‘high’ impacts in the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands. Wind is the primary consideration for naming a storm, but additional impacts from rain or snow will also be considered in the naming process. The naming process began in 2015 and the list runs from early September to late August to align with the beginning of Autumn and end of Summer.
